This is Emmy’s version of a widespread song of an actual horse race that took place in Louisville, Kentucky, in 1878. On record, one can hear other variants: “Ten Brooks and Molly” by Bill Monroe, also by the Stanley Brothers; “Run Mollie Run” by Henry Thomas; “Timbrook Blues” by Jim Byrd; and “Old Tim Brooks” by the Carver Boys (her cousins). Related versions and floating verses are heard in “Old Stewball,” “Skewball,” “Old Kimball,” and “Ain’t That Skippin’” and “Flying” by the Allen Brothers.
